4 Productivity Hacks for A Successful Tutoring Business

If you were to ask me why I love tutoring so much, my answer would be….

Tutoring combines my favorite part of teaching (working with kids 1-1) and allows me to have control over how I make extra money.

I love working 1-1 with kids and really feeling the impact I’m making.

And while I was dealing with behavior problems on a daily basis in the classroom, I wasn’t getting to work 1-1 with kids that often.  In fact, it forced me to do whole group lessons so I could try to reach everyone.  I left each day feeling defeated and like I was making zero impact.

A lightbulb moment happened when I realized I could be using skills I already had from years of teaching experience in a tutoring side hustle.

All those years of working random side jobs to earn extra money to make up for my teacher salary now seemed like the distant past.

What if you too could combine the thing you love teaching the most with grateful parents and amazing students as your clients?  What if you could leverage your skills to help eradicate your teacher burnout while also helping alleviate the stress of living paycheck to paycheck?

Tutoring just a handful of clients a week has the power to change your life in so many ways, you just need to START!

You wouldn’t be reading this blog post if you didn’t have the drive to build a better life for yourself.

When I started tutoring, I was just winging it.  Of course that works, but it certainly isn’t the most efficient.  For starters, I felt like I was always scrambling to put materials together.

Having a plan every week has not only helped me with my tutoring business, it’s also helped me grow my client list.

I want to help you get organized and make a plan!  I’ve narrowed it down to 4 steps to increase your productivity in your tutoring business.

1. Create a weekly schedule of your clients

It’s important to schedule each tutoring session as well as preparation time for each client.  The last thing you want is to scramble right before you head out the door to tutor.  I recommend writing out the entire month so you’ll have it handy when you need it.

2. Write lesson plans for each client

A lesson plan doesn’t have to be super detailed but you should have a written plan for each student so you can keep track of learning objectives, materials needed, and what areas you are focusing your instruction on.

3. Set aside time for tutoring lesson prep

Keeping track of what each tutoring client is working on is important for many reasons.  You definitely want to have a firm grasp of what they are working on and what they are working towards.  Setting aside time to prep for their lessons is just as important as the session itself.  I recommend filling out a lesson planner sheet on a weekly basis to help you stay on track and organized.

4. Update parents a few times a month

Of course you’ll be checking in with parents when you’re actually at their house or when you see them on Zoom.  I think an added touch is filling out a form letting parents know exactly what you’ve been working on and what goals you have set for their child is valuable to them.

So there you have it.  4 ways to set your tutoring business on fire.  Setting aside time each week to put all 4 steps in place is not only going to make you more efficient, but you’ll find yourself feeling like the business owner that you really are!
