5 Reasons Teacher Entrepreneurs Need To Start Their Email List
Starting your email list is a pivotal step in growing your online presence. When I’m coaching my students inside of Tutorpreneur Academy®, we chat a lot about putting the pieces of their business together in the correct order. One thing you’ll hear me say over and over again is you can’t build your business on borrowed land. What this simply means is that social media is not the place to hedge all your bets. Instagram is a great place to build connections and make sales, but at the end of the day, your social media accounts could disappear. If you haven’t been building your email list in the meantime, you’ll be starting from zero. To think it won’t happen to you is a huge mistake. In this blog post, I’m going to cover why teacher entrepreneurs need to start their email list.
Your email list is something YOU own
As I mentioned above, you can’t grow a business on borrowed land. When you pay for a CRM (customer relationship management) tool, you’re the owner of your email list. If you aren’t jazzed about spending money yet, let me tell you, a good CRM tool is worth the money. I personally use Kajabi for my email marketing and online courses and truly believe it’s worth every penny. You can try it out for a free 14-day trial by clicking here! Kajabi also has website hosting capabilities as well as blog hosting. It’s a one-stop shop if you’re looking for one place to run your business. Don’t forget that your CRM system is a tax right off!
Email is the perfect place to sell your products and services
Let’s pretend you’re just starting out and you’ve already created your first offer. Congratulations! That’s a huge step. The only problem is you don’t have anyone to sell it to. Building your email list is a key step to being able to sell products and services down the road. We have to build like, know and trust with our audience before they’re ever going to buy from us. Once you nurture your audience and create trust, you’ll be able to pitch your products and services to them in a way that feels natural and like the next step.
Nurture your email list by repurposing your blog or YouTube content
It can be daunting when you’re first starting out to wrap your head around creating weekly content to serve your audience. Creating a content calendar with a strategy is a great place to start. You’re likely overthinking the entire process. If you’re creating a blog each week, turn that same topic into a YouTube video or vice versa. I myself do just that and have found that it serves my audience in two different ways. Some people prefer a video while others would rather read a blog. My next step on my goals is to repurpose yet again on a podcast. Being a full-time teacher and running a business is a lot, but if you master the art of repurposing your content, you’ll realize it’s not as difficult as it once seemed.
It’s much easier to sell to a warm audience than a cold one
A warm audience has been served consistent, weekly content that helps solve their problems. A cold audience is an audience who maybe gets an email every few months. When you’re ready to sell, which audience is going to make the most money? You guessed it: the warm audience. It’s going to feel like you’re doing a lot of work up front and it’s because you are. The more seasoned you get in your business, the easier the content will be to create and repurpose for years to come.
Email is the most reliable form of communication
If I had to name one person I know who doesn’t have email, I honestly couldn’t think of one. Almost everyone has email and certainly the people you’re going to attract to your online business have an email. Relying on social media to keep in contact is a failed strategy. When you use a customer relationship management tool, everything will be kept in one place for you. You’ll also be able to track analytics and data by looking at email open rates, click through rates, and unsubscribes. I teach you the strategies I personally use inside of Tutorpreneur Academy®!
Email helps drive traffic to your website, blog, YouTube channel and TPT store
Another metric you can use to help create content for your email list, is the traffic that is being driven to your website, blog, YouTube channel and Teachers Pay Teachers store. You don’t have to be salesy in every email, but you can offer up solutions you offer inside your emails that will include links to your blog posts, YouTube videos and products in your TPT store. It’s a great way to drive traffic to these sites organically without being pushy.
