5 Steps for a Successful Tutoring Plan
Creating a successful tutoring plan takes a lot of planning and a little creativity. By streamlining your tutoring business, you will find it easier to expand and create more opportunities for teaching and engaging students. I’m breaking down 5 steps to help you create a successful tutoring plan.
I'm going to break down the five exact steps you need to be successful as a tutor. I've been tutoring for a while now and this list comes from all of my experience as well as my students inside of Tutorpreneur Academy®. My hope is that you'll be able to take this list with you and take some action right away. If you have analysis paralysis, you’ll never make the next move. If you’re reading this blog, you are highly ambitious and ready for the next step.
Make sure you’re charging enough for your tutoring services
My first tip for success as a tutor is to make sure you're charging enough. If you missed my blog post last week about how much to charge for tutoring, go back and read that one. I break down exactly how you can figure out your ideal tutoring rate. I even give you the link to my free tutoring income calculator, which you can find here too. It does all the math for you and ensures that you're maximizing your time so you can reach your monthly income goals and grow a successful tutoring business.
Streamline your tutoring business by tutoring pods and online
My next tip is to streamline your business. Right now, gas prices are sky high, maybe tutoring online would be more profitable for you because you're not really reaping the benefits of tutoring and driving around town and going back and forth to people's houses. That is a huge thing. For me, it also takes a lot of time to drive; time you could be tutoring more kids in between sessions instead of driving. Tutoring pods is great to streamline your business. I am a big fan of this. What you charge for a pod depends on if you're comfortable with charging. My opinion – charge the same amount for each kid. If you charge a lower rate, to get more people to sign up, that's fine too, but if you tutor more kids, you can earn more per hour, per kid instead of just one at a time. You’ll also be helping more kids each day which I feel is a win-win as a teacher with limited time. I've never had a parent complain that I wasn't working with their kid one to one because they know that they're getting great instruction. If you're a highly qualified teacher, it doesn't matter if you have one kid or if you have three sitting at your table, you're giving them what they need. Likely you're going to be grouping them based on ability or a skill that they're working on. Don't let other people's opinions of pods hold you back from doing that.
Create teaching resources to sell on TPT and your website
My third tip is to create resources to sell. I talk about this all the time. I think selling your own teaching resources on Teachers Pay Teachers is a great addition to your tutoring business because it's passive income. Once you get your products created, they're up on the website they're selling, you can also sell them on your own website and double dip. You'll love hearing that cha-ching sound on your watch. That's why I named my online course From Zero To Cha-Ching (How to create resources that sell!) because I love that sound as a classroom teacher! You could be having just the most awful day, but then hear “cha-ching” in the middle of the day and suddenly, you feel so much better. You're probably making resources for your tutoring clients now and you should be selling them on Teachers Pay Teachers too. I’m sure your resources are probably fantastic and you're selling yourself short if you're not doing that.
Build an online course or membership in your tutoring niche
Tip number four is to build an online course or membership. I had a couple of YouTube videos about this earlier this month. You can watch those here. This is definitely “next level game” for your tutoring business. It's not something I would recommend starting out the gate. However, if you're a more established tutor, and you have things pretty figured out, then I think your next step is to create a course with the questions that people have asked you in the past the most frequently or combining it with a teaching resource. I broke that down for you step by step in those last couple of videos.
Talk about your business every day to grow your email list
My last tip is to talk about your business every single day. If you want to have more clients and if you want to sell more products, you have to tell people about your business every day. This could be on social media and your Instagram stories. It could be a post about what you offer. It could just be the content that you're sharing that helps your ideal customer solve their problems. I think we overthink this one a lot and we think we're being salesy, and that's why inside of Tutorpreneur Promo Kit Mini Course®, there's over 25 editable templates and lessons on how to use the templates. I recently updated all the Instagram templates to meet the new size requirement of 1080x1350 which covers more of an iPhone screen or Android. This power-packed mini course is my lowest price offer. It helps create all of your social media posts, helps you advertise for yourself organically using Canva templates and there’s mini lessons for EVERY template. There's also a bonus lesson on creating Instagram Reels and TikTok videos. Teachers are blowing up Instagram and TikTok right now and so are tutors! There's a couple tutors on TikTok that have thousands of followers and it's because they've really niche down and they're talking about their business every day by solving problems. You can do that too. I know you can.
