Life Lessons From A Tutorpreneur®
Life lessons are sometimes hard to come by. Life experiences can be tough or joyful, but these lessons are imperative to learning and growing not only as a person, but as a tutor as well.
Today we are talking about life lessons that I have learned in my Tutorpreneur® journey and I am sharing with you the wisdom I've gained along the way.
I'm going to talk to you all about how to create the life you want to live as a Tutorpreneur®. I'm a big believer in using your tutoring business to really blossom as an entrepreneur in other ways. You don't have to trade all of your time for dollars, meaning just tutoring to grow a successful business and I'm going to shed some light on that today.
How do you want your life to look while running a successful tutoring business?
If you are leading with a fear based mindset, it's really going to stop you from growing your business. For scalable business growth, you really need to adopt a growth mindset. It’s important for you to grow your business mindset so you can start making extra money and some money passively as well. The end result? You’ll finally be able to stop trading all your time for dollars. The first question I want you to ask yourself is: how do you want your life to look? What kind of hours do you want to work? If you're a full time teacher like myself, do you want to be tutoring every single day after school? I know I don't, I just want to have a handful of clients and meet my monthly income goals. I prefer to use my other blocks of free time to create Teachers Pay Teachers products and sell those passively. I have tons of videos about how to do all of that so make sure you check out my series on YouTube on selling on TpT. One of the biggest goals of my business is to help you establish a firm foundation for your tutoring business so that you can branch out and do other things like I just mentioned. It's all possible for you, you just have to have the belief that you can do it. So what kind of life do you want to lead as a tutor printer? What do you want your day today to look like? What are your big goals? Be sure to write those all down!
Creating the life you want versus the life you think you're supposed to have is life-changing
I want you to focus on creating the life you want, versus the life you think you're supposed to have. One key to this is to stop comparing yourself to other people. Maybe there's a really big teacherpreneur account that you follow and they're always talking about X, Y, and Z and it makes you feel bad about yourself - totally normal. You don't have to unfollow them, but you could definitely make it so that they don't pop up in your Instagram feed as often if it's making you feel bad about yourself. The secret to keeping your business moving is to focus on your own business and your own growth while staying in your own lane. I like to think about keeping blinders on and not worrying about what other people are doing next to me. You'll be more creative. That way, you will get people to know your real personality better. I've met a few people that follow me and even one person in real life who is in my course who lives in Colorado, and I’m always told I’m exactly how they thought I would be in person. If you're being your authentic self, then it's going to come across and you are going to have that like, know and trust factor and you're going to grow your business in so many other ways that you didn't even know were possible.
You don't have to trade all your time for dollars as a successful Tutorpreneur®
You don't have to trade all your time for dollars as a successful Tutorpreneur®. A little secret about me is that I didn't tutor at all this summer, I took a break. One of the reasons is I am switching schools and I'm switching from first grade to fifth grade and I wanted to have a break so I could wrap my mind around what I'm going to be doing this fall. I wanted to work on other passive streams of income like my Teachers Pay teacher's store and I wanted to help more teachers start their own TPT stores’ inside my membership: From Zero To Cha-Ching. I also wanted to work on Tutorpreneur Academy® because I'm going to be launching that again at the end of September. I’m always striving to make things even better, use the feedback from my current members and make the live coaching sessions exactly what my members need. To be able to focus on those things to make that passive income doesn't mean I'm not tutoring again ever in my life. It just means that I had to take a break from that and I was able to do that because of my passive streams of income and I know you can do that too.
Create multiple streams of income so you can tutor less and earn more money
I want you to start creating passive streams of income. My favorite way to do that is starting your own Teachers Pay Teachers store. I have tons of YouTube videos on this. I just ran a free four day challenge on how to get started doing that which you can still take advantage of here. I'm really passionate about making Teachers Pay Teachers accessible to more people and not so out of reach. If that's something you're interested in as well, you can and check out all my videos about that, because I think it's something that you should be doing. We often talk about just teachers doing it and it’s not just for teachers, you can be a tutor and have your own TpT store. Even if you’re not in the classroom at the moment, you are a teacher in your tutoring business, working with kids, one to one or in small groups.
Build a business that honors your boundaries and allows you to live life with purpose and freedom
Lastly, I want you to build a business that honors your boundaries and allows you to live the life that you really want to live. One of the ways that you can do that is by writing down the things that you really liked doing, and making a list of the things you don't. Once your business starts making more money, I'm going to encourage you to outsource things. For example, let's say you're blogging, which you should be, then you could outsource the blog images and the Pinterest part of blogging. This is something I did from day one before I even had a lot of money to spend and hile that was kind of risky to do, it was worth every penny and that person still works for me. Outsourcing the things you don't like to do will really help you increase your time that you can be creative whether its creating videos or making TPT products, hiring someone to help you will free you up. I would never recommend quitting your day job before your teacher side hustle was making enough income to replace your teaching salary. That way you can hire people and when you’re ready to quit, you’ll have amazing systems in place.
Another way to build boundaries is by having a tutoring contract. A contract is the best way to let your clients know what you expect. The great part? You can completely customize your contract. Check out the exact tutoring contract template I use in my own tutoring business (created by a lawyer!)

So there you have it. Life lessons I’ve learned from being a Tutorpreneur®. You’re capable of having the life you want while making the money you deserve. You just have to start!
