One of my amazing Tutorpreneur Academy® student’s, Elizabeth, sent me a voice message on Voxer with this question: “How do you do it all?” She went on to say that she just went back to school (she’s a middle school teacher) and she’s tired at the end of every day. I completely understand how she feels because I’m a first grade teacher at a Title One school and I’m 100% tired by the end of the day as well. It’s not easy being a teacher, especially during the time we’re living in!

Tutoring allowed me to work 1-1 with kids and feel like a real teacher again, you know the kind of teacher who is appreciated? As I head back to school in a week, I plan to continue to tutor on my own terms. For me, that looks like a smaller client list and tutoring either from home or tutoring online.

Getting ghosted by a potential tutoring client can be completely frustrating. You know the story, someone reaches out to you, seems really interested in working with you, you write a beautiful email back, and days go by hearing nothing in return. It can be completely frustrating and demoralizing. (I know, I’ve been there!) And heck, they reached out to you first and then no response. Before you get too upset, I’m going to remind you of a few things.

There’s a myth that you have to have it all figured out to start a business. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to have it all figured out to get started. In fact, starting before you’re ready might be the very thing that saves you. My business helped cure my teacher burnout.

If you want to find out how much it actually costs to start and grow a successful tutoring business, you’ve come to the right place, friend. There’s a lot of information out there and it can be intimidating to start. It’s also hard to get a straight answer from all the places you’ve likely searched. I’ve been where you are and I don’t want you to make all the mistakes I’ve made. So let me backup a bit. It was two years ago I was sitting in my car in my elementary school parking lot about to reply to an email committing to working with a branding company. I’d just started my tutoring business and was determined to make it work (even though I had no idea what I was doing). I was about to invest in a huge cost for my business.

Growing your tutoring business isn’t as hard as you’re making it. Let’s say you’re currently tutoring 5 kids, but to hit your monthly revenue goal of $1,000 extra a month, you think you need 5 more clients. You’ve done the math on the tutoring income calculator but you’re running low on hours in the day. It’s true, you could tutor more kids but you’re likely teaching full-time and unsure where you could squeeze in extra sessions with balancing your own personal life and family. That’s where learning pods come in.

A mindset shift is going to be crucial to turning your expertise into a successful tutoring business. Chances are if you love teaching a topic, you’re an expert at it. We quick to think an expert means someone with a fancy title or PhD behind their name. Once you have a thorough list of content you are an expert at, you’ve got the makings of a successful tutoring business.
