Brand Your Tutoring Business Like a Boss

When I first started my tutoring business I wasted a lot of time on my business name.  I even used a business name generator at one point!  Finally, my amazing husband, with a creative mind, came up with Literacy Fundamentals.

Starting a tutoring business is an exciting time!  There is so much to take in and you may be feeling overwhelmed by all the branding mumbo-jumbo you see on Instagram, Pinterest, or Google.

You’re probably so overwhelmed that staring at your computer screen is about all the energy you have left this year.

I’m going to take away some of your stress and help!

This blog post is going to teach you how to brand your tutoring business like a boss so you can start earning money like a boss.  Ya feel me?

I think there’s a lot of misconceptions about branding your business.  People tend to overly complicate the process which leads to overwhelm and lack of action.  When we feel overwhelmed it's easy to hit the pause button on our dreams and say “I’ll do that later.”  You are not that kind of Tutorpreneur!  You have big dreams for yourself and nothing is going to get in your way.

It can also be tempting to see what someone else is doing and copy it.  Don’t do that!  The world has never seen anyone like YOU, so be the unique and amazing person YOU are.  Don’t let yourself get caught up in the comparison trap.  “Comparison is the thief of joy.”  Say that out loud and don’t let what anyone else is doing steal your joy.

Take Michael Jordan for example.  When he was first starting out, he was a basketball player.  When Nike approached him to endorse a new sneaker, he seized the opportunity to dominate the sneaker world with his trademark Air Jordan’s.  Can you even think about Michael Jordan without thinking about his shoes?  Nope!

Think about your favorite brands.  What do you love about them?  What do you think about when someone says their name?

Creating your own brand is the launching pad for business.  Picture yourself with your business in the future.  What do you want for your future self?  What dreams do you have?  You can build that with your brand, baby!

Creating your own brand is the launching pad for your business.

Branding is the marriage of who you are and what you do.  Don’t mistake branding for just your logo and your brand colors.  Those are important but your brand tells the world what you are all about and what you intend to do for them.  Your brand tells your story.  It lets your customer know your journey. A book I always recommend is Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller.  It’s a great place to start if you are looking to level up your brand.

My first tip is to stop overthinking your brand.  Ask yourself these questions to narrow down your unique voice.

  1. What niche is my tutoring business in? (Be specific!  Examples: math, science, reading, SAT prep)

  2. Who is my ideal customer? (Who do I tutor?)

  3. How do I serve my clients? (Online, in person, both)

  4. Do I want my name to be the business name OR a different handle?

  5. What feeling do I want people to feel when they think about my business?

Once you nail these ideas down we can get to the fun part!  If you’re not a graphic designer, don’t worry, I’ve got some great options for you.

Check out websites that hire freelance designers like Upwork (my personal favorite) or Fiverr.  The price range is going to depend on the expertise of the freelancer.  Look at their portfolio and don’t be afraid to ask questions before hiring!

Have the freelancer create some mockups of your brand logo and a color palette.  Be specific on what you like and don’t like.  It helps to send them a few examples of other brands you admire so they can get a feel for your taste in design.

Be consistent in your brand once you’ve created a brand that’s totally you!  Consistency is king when it comes to your ideal customer finding you and identifying with your brand.  Your customers will know what to expect when they see you because of consistency.

Once you’ve landed on the dreamest color palette and name, that means sticking to themes on Pinterest, blogging, YouTube or wherever you show up the most for your people.  We’re living in a world where attention spans are getting shorter and shorter.  You want your brand to stop the scroll and make people think “Oh Molly just posted something, I’m going to go check it out.”

Branding yourself for your tutoring business is the first step to treating yourself like a boss.  Creating a business is no small feat so pat yourself on the back and enjoy the process.  There are no shortcuts to success.  Take small steps to create the business you want on YOUR terms.
