How to Set Goals for Your Tutoring Business

All successful businesses set goals.  You my Tutorpreneur™ friend, are no different!

You have big dreams of a successful tutoring business that allows you the financial freedom you deserve.

Maybe you’ll tutor full-time and can leave the classroom.  Or maybe you can finally afford that trip to Italy you’ve been thinking about since you were in college.  Or just maybe, you can get new tires on the van and send your kid to piano lessons.

Tutoring isn’t just a side hustle, it’s a job that you create the rules, hours and pay.

You’re using skills you already have from the classroom so there’s not a big learning curve or any crazy selling you need to do.

The demand for tutoring is at an all time high right now. You can easily make an extra $1,000 a month, without quitting your day job with just a handful of clients each week.

In the book Atomic Habits, James Clear says “Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress.”

I want to help you not only set goals but learn how to create systems that help you reach them!

Let’s set some goals first so you can crush your tutoring business in 2021!

The key to crushing your business goals for the New Year is setting goals that are SMART.

Smart stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound.

Let’s break those down into bite size chunks. Get a notebook and a pen so you can manifest your goals and set them out in the universe to start working for you.

Getting Specific

In order to set goals, they need to be specific.  What exactly do you want to achieve?  Who is involved?  What will you need to achieve this goal?  What systems do you need in place to reach your goal.  If you want to gain more tutoring clients, put a number on that goal. “I will gain 2 tutoring clients each month until I reach 10 clients total.”

Make it Measurable

If your goal isn’t measurable, then it’s not attainable.  How much do you want to earn this year in your business?  How many clients do you want to add?  Once you have a goal that’s measurable, your subconscious can start working on it.  “I earn $1,000 a month from my tutoring business.”

Achieve to Succeed

When goal setting, you also need to think about practicality.  Stretch your abilities but also remain realistic.  It would be unrealistic to say I’m going to lose 150 pound in 1 month but realistic to say in 1 year.  Aim high but also think realistically about your goals.

Keep it Relevant

Your goal should have relevance to your life and business.  If you set arbitrary goals, then you won’t move the needle forward on your business.  Just saying “I want to gain more followers on Instagram” is an arbitrary goal.  Change that to “I have 250 email subscribers on my list” and BAM you’ve got a smart goal that’s relevant and will move mountains in your business.

Time is Everything

In order for you to reach your goal, you need to set time limits.  If 365 days is too long, then break your goal down into mini goals.  For example, if you want to earn $10,000 in tutoring this year, you might have mini goals each quarter.  How much would you have to make each month to get to the end of the year goal of $10,000? $10,000/12 months = $833.00 per month.  Take the guesswork out and use my Tutoring Calculator to see how quickly you can reach your monetary goals!

A key to succeeding in your tutoring business goals is rewarding yourself.  Once you meet a goal, you need to celebrate it!  Maybe you’ve had your eye on some new workout clothes and that would be the perfect reward for your efforts.  Perhaps it's dinner out with your hubby and getting a babysitter.  Whatever you define as a reward, it needs to happen when you meet your goals.

One of the best books I’ve ever read is Atomic Habits by James Clear.  This book teaches you how to create new habits and ditch habits that are no longer serving you.  It’s one of those books that you’ll read every year to get a fresh perspective.  You’ll soon be crushing your goals after reading this book.

Now is the perfect time to start your tutoring business.  Parents are in dire need of extra help for their kids and with teacher burnout at an all time high, tutoring could be the gift you need to overcome it like I did.
