How to Turn Your Expertise into a Successful Tutoring Business

How to turn your expertise into a successful tutoring business

Turn your teacher expertise into a successful business

A successful tutoring business starts with one key element: YOU.

You might be thinking, that’s great Molly, but how do I even know what my expertise is so I can create a successful tutoring business?

I’m so glad you asked because it’s pretty simple!

If you’re a classroom teacher, think about your favorite subject or class to teach.

Now that you have your favorite subject or class to teach in your mind, think about what it would be like to focus on that while making the money you truly deserve.

It’d feel pretty frickin’ awesome, right?

A successful tutoring business starts with you

I talk about finding your tutoring niche all the time, and once you’ve got that step pinned down, you’re ready to start tutoring.  Even if you don’t have all the other steps figured out yet, your niche is fundamental to getting your first client.

Too often are we plagued with self-doubt.  Thoughts like:

Who would want tutoring from me?”

“I’m only a first year teacher.”

“I have no idea where to begin.”

A mindset shift is going to be crucial to turning your expertise into a successful tutoring business.

And according to Napoleon Hill, you’re not alone if you’ve ever felt defeated.

“Most great people have achieved their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.”

Now that we have your self-doubt taken care of, we can make a plan to build the profitable tutoring business of your dreams!

Start by making a list of all the content you love teaching.  For example, if you love teaching K-2 reading, your list might include:

Chances are if you love teaching a topic, you’re an expert at it.  We quick to think an expert means someone with a fancy title or PhD behind their name.

The definition of an expert is: a person who has a comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of or skill in a particular area.

Once you have a thorough list of content you are an expert at, you’ve got the makings of a successful tutoring business.

Your expertise is also the foundation to creating a scalable tutoring business that makes money while you sleep.  (Something I teach in the Tutorpreneur Academ)

I once heard if you know 10% more than the person you’re teaching, you’re ahead of the game.  Annnnnd if you’re already a teacher who loves teaching specific content, my assumption is you’re closer to knowing 90% more than the person you’re tutoring!

If you’re just starting out, chances are you don’t have many systems and processes in place yet.  To be successful, there are some automation hacks that will help grow and scale your tutoring business over time.

With time and persistence, you'll build a known brand

With time and persistence, you'll build a known brand

One system I recommend documenting thoroughly is how you teach what you teach.  This will come in handy when you are trying to land new tutoring clients and when you give your elevator pitch about your business.

An example of this could be:

  • Word work activity

  • Reread book from last time

  • Teach new concept and introduce new book

  • Play game to tie new and old concepts together

Creating systems and processes is as simple as writing down steps.  Think informational writing unit at the elementary level.

Your expertise is unique to you and you alone.  Take your unique teacher gifts and leverage them in your tutoring business.

Once you’ve got a list of what you love to teach and how you’re going to teach it, you’ve built a stable foundation to start getting clients.

So there you have it.  A clear path to turning your expertise into a successful tutoring business.

Once you get started you’ll become the “known for” brand and you’ll wish you had started sooner!
