Simple Strategy To Optimizing Your Email List
Optimizing your email list is easier than you think! There’s a few things you can do to grow your list while making sure it’s full of your ideal customers. Of course you know I’m all about list building so let's dive right into what you need to do to optimize your email list to grow your online teacher and tutoring business.
Invest in email marketing early on
Email marketing is the bread and butter of a successful business. A lot of times we put off starting our email list because we don’t think it’s necessary. Maybe you feel you don’t have anything to offer so you simply don’t create one. Or maybe you’re a tutor and you don’t sell any products so you tell yourself you don’t need an email list to get more clients. This is not true and leaves your business to fall victim to not growing! Maybe you have a Teachers Pay Teachers store and the products are listed on there so if someone wants to buy, they’ll find them there. Sure, TPT is a well established platform that teachers find resources on, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll find your products just because they’re on there. Having an email list not only helps you sell those products later down the road, but it also helps you establish authority in your niche.
Email marketing is a foundation that should be part of your teacher business
Email marketing is the number one foundation you need to grow your teacher business. If you’re looking for an all in one platform that can host your website, blog, sell products and services and host your email list, I recommend Kajabi. You can try Kajabi for 14 days free here! A strong house is built on a solid foundation and your business is no exception to that rule. If you’re looking for a free option to get started, I recommend Mail Chimp. It’s not as user friendly as Kajabi, but it’s free. It’s a great option if cost is holding you back. Email marketing is a tax write off so remember that if you’re wanting a better option like Kajabi.
Feel confident sending emails to your list
I want you to start feeling confident using email. If you second guess yourself and aren’t sure what to say, it’s going to come across in your emails. Use story telling to talk about problems that your ideal customer is having and talk about solutions that will work for them. This can be in the form of tips and tricks or even your products and services. This is why I recommend all teachers and tutors have a Teachers Pay Teachers store because talking about your products becomes so natural once you start nurturing your email list.
Connect your ideal customer’s problems with solutions you provide
Your audience craves a real connection with you. Likely the reason they signed up for your email list in the first place is because they felt a connection with a story you told or your own journey. If your readers feel a connection with you, they’re going to click the links in your emails even if it’s just a link to a blog post you wrote because you are providing helpful solutions to their problems. I do recommend blogging on a weekly basis and repurposing that content in as many ways as you can. If you missed my 4-week long blogging series, you can check those blog posts out here.
Use the 80/20 rule when creating content for your ideal customer
Don’t give away all the solutions in your weekly content. Practicing the 80/20 rule means you’re giving away helpful information 80% of the time and 20% of the time the solution is your services or products like an online course. Your ideal customer will love receiving your amazing weekly content and once they feel nurtured, they’re going to be more inclined to buy from you.
Let people who want to leave your email list, leave
Part of optimizing your email list is letting people who want to leave, leave. If someone downloads your lead magnet and quickly unsubscribes, this is a good thing! They likely were never going to buy from you in the first place and weren’t an ideal customer. You should be cleaning your email list a few times a month. I do this myself and although it can be cringey to hit delete, it’s going to make your open and click rates look better and give you valuable information to help you grow your email list. Your ideal reader is waiting each week for your weekly email and that’s exactly who you want on your email list.
Focus on the benefits you provide
When you’re talking about your products and services, it’s nice to talk about features but a more engaged email list subscriber is going to know how it benefits them. Focusing on the benefits of a product or service is going to be a great way to build the like, know and trust factor with you and your audience. Most people want to know what’s in it for them and when you craft blog posts and YouTube videos with this in mind, you’ll start making passive sales.
Use storytelling to make connections and build trust with your audience
Think about watching a movie that’s really boring. Do you keep watching it or do you turn it off and do something else? If we get drawn into the story and a connection is made, you feel like there’s a personal connection. From there you tell people about it and talk about it with your friends. Think of your email list in the same way. Building connections through storytelling will help build trust with your audience. People will come back to you for the solutions to their problems because they relate to you.
So there you have it. Simple strategies to optimize your email list so you can grow your teacher business into a thriving, passive income machine! Just remember it’s okay to say goodbye to people who aren’t our ideal customers.
