Unlock the Key to Profitable Online Tutoring with These 4 Secrets

It’s no secret that teaching is one of the hardest jobs there is.

Parents who didn’t already know that teaching was hard, found out when they were suddenly tasked with monitoring their child’s learning this past year.

Working from home and parenting at the same time is TOUGH.

As we head back to school, there is a huge demand for online tutoring.

Parents need help and want to make sure their kids are on the right track for the coming school year.

Now is the perfect time to power up your computer and brush up on your Zoom skills.

I firmly believe every teacher can create their own successful online tutoring business.

The best part? I’ve made all the mistakes for you so you don’t have to make them.

Talk about a win-win!

I firmly believe every teacher can create their own successful online tutoring business.

In today’s blog post, I’m going to give you the 4 secrets to a profitable online tutoring business.

Buckle your seat belt because you’re about to uncover what you’re truly made of.

The 4 Secrets to a Profitable Online Tutoring Business:

  1. Clients

Tutoring online is a service, so the first thing you’ll need is a client.  Now, you might be thinking “But Molly, I don’t know anyone.”  Stop right there - YES you do!  If you’re a teacher you have a huge pool of potential clients.  I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again - tutor your first client for free.  Yes, tutoring for free can lead to a lucrative tutoring business down the road.  Why?  You’ll have social proof that your services are legit and reputable.  In exchange for the free tutoring, ask the client’s parent for a kick-butt testimonial.  Future clients will want to know why you are different from other tutors and what they can expect from your services.  I talk about this all the time on Instagram

Just remember this: A great testimonial = social proof.

2. Computer

Seems straightforward, but yes, you will need a computer to run your tutoring business.  Luckily, this is a commodity that most people have.  I do recommend a computer over a tablet or iPad for tutoring online.  Make sure you have a quiet space to tutor from as well. It’s distracting to have background noises.  The amazing part about working from a computer is that you can work from anywhere in the world.  How amazing would it be to call the shots and create your own hours?  What teacher doesn’t want more autonomy and control over their life?!?

3. Confidence

You really need to dig deep and trust your abilities.  On Instagram this week, I said something about not being a “techie” person.  Someone messaged me and reminded me to not speak negatively about myself.  She’s 100% right.  When we start saying negative things about ourselves, they manifest.  Trust your abilities!  If you’re good at teaching math, then you should be tutoring math.

For me personally, I’m a strong reading and writing teacher, so that’s where I focus my energy in my tutoring business.  It’s important to niche down in your tutoring so that your confidence grows exponentially in the area you tutor.

4. Compassion

Right now, there is so much going on in the world.  Parents are working from home and trying to manage their children’s education on a whole new level.  If you can deliver the most effective and efficient tutoring, that’s great, but if you’re doing it with zero compassion, then your trustworthiness is out the window.  Just like you wouldn’t want to buy a car from a sleazy salesperson, a parent doesn’t want a tutor working with their child who isn’t compassionate.  Don’t mistake compassion for lack of boundaries.  Boundaries are super important in your business, but that’s a blog for another day.

So there you have it.  The 4 C’s to cultivating a profitable online tutoring business.

The amazing part? You most likely have all 4 things at your fingertips.

Trust yourself and trust your ability to provide the best services possible to your clients.
